Team Hutt members are encouraged to participate in the season ski racing schedule.   Team Hutt will participate in all races at Mt Hutt, and travel to select National Points and FIS races. Here is a description of the different race levels.

Running ski races is only possible with the help of parent volunteers. All parents need to assist with volunteering on races. Information will be sent out through the season on ways you can volunteer.

Flying Keas Races

Flying Keas races are free races run at Mt Hutt. These races are set up as an entry level event, open to the U8, U10, U12, and U14 athletes. The course set is an easy Giant Slalom on lower Johnny Doles. Bibs and timing are provided, but there are no medals or position prizes. The focus is instead on fun and participation. No speed suits to be worn at Flying Keas. No SSNZ Registration is required for Flying Keas races. Registration is via the Mt Hutt website.

Interfield Races

The Interfield events are targeted for U8, U10, and U12 athletes. U14 and U16 may participate, however we recommend that they move up to National Points races. Interfields includes Slalom and Giant Slalom races. You must be registered as a member with Snow Sports NZ, and race registration is through the SSNZ website.

National Points Races

National Point events are targeted for U14 and U16 athletes, and are also open to U19 athletes. We recommend that U19 athletes move up to FIS races. You must be a Snow Sports New Zealand registered Athlete.  National Points races may include Slalom, Giant Slalom, and Super-G.  National points are allocated to each competitor and are added to the National Points list. The national points list is available on the Snow Sports New Zealand website.

FIS Races

FIS alpine ski racing is the international pathway for competitive ski racers progressing beyond regional and national competition. Governed by the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS), these events include slalom, giant slalom, super-G, downhill, and alpine combined disciplines, with athletes earning FIS points that contribute to national rankings and qualification for higher-level competitions. In New Zealand, there are entry level races and ANC (continental cup) level races, in both slalom and giant slalom. FIS racing requires a FIS licence, which is obtained through Snow Sports NZ, and FIS approved equipment. Please discuss any questions about racing at this level with the Program Director.
